After almost three decades here on Earth I haven’t grown an entire meal myself. Not one.

I make phone calls. Send emails. Answer questions strategically. Build relationships. My survival tactics are political and almost 100% mental. The more successful I am at genuinely connecting with other humans, the easier my survival becomes.

At dinner, I don’t know who killed the bison, picked the arugula or crushed the grapes, and the system is set up so that I don’t have to. I didn’t expend any of the energy necessary to hunt or gather the food on my table. Deep down, I’m a little ashamed of this fact.

The violence and energy required to survive in the wild as an animal make the average person’s job seem comicially simple and devoid of risk.

It’s a delicate system. If we can’t keep it afloat and paper money is only valuable for starting fires, the people with real survival skills will be ok.

The rest of us have had a good run here on the steak-eating side of The Matrix.

The neighborhood birds have sent Phyllis a strongly scented (and...

The neighborhood birds have sent Phyllis a strongly scented (and impressively aimed) message. If it works, ship it. Revise it later if you have to.

If you have a project you’ve been working on for a long time, it’s quite possible that it’s already done. You might just be wary of putting it out there for the world to see.

Once it’s done, people can and will judge it. If you’re working on a painting, it can be a work in progress forever if you let it. Just because you can find room for another happy little tree doesn’t mean your painting needs it.

That is not to say that I advocate churning out crappy work. Your definition of done may be different than mine, but if your standards are high, done will do just fine.

Forget perfect. Get it done.

Sometimes the light hits just right… (Taken with...

Sometimes the light hits just right… (Taken with instagram)

nevver:

They know who they are and are comfortable in their own skin.

If you don’t know who you are on a basic human level, you can’t represent yourself honestly. You can try, but your energy won’t be quite right. Something will feel off.

The phrase, “just be yourself” exists for a very good reason. When you try to be what other people want you to be, you set yourself up for inevitable failure.

Sometimes a quote sums it up well.

“The more you know who you are, and what you want, the less you let things upset you.”

Stick with me, this will make sense.

Let’s say that I took a photo on my iPhone and decided to share it with Instagram.

Perhaps I chose to share it via Facebook from within Instagram.

On Facebook, you’d see the image below:

As you can see, nobody chose to like it. Using the liked vs. not liked logic, this photo was completely un-liked. That’s always a bummer.

If, for some strange reason, you decided to click on the image, you’d see Facebook’s lightbox view below:

Again, not a single person liked it on Facebook. Cue the tumbleweed.

If you clicked the Instagram URL link from the lightbox view, you’d see the image below, which is the only web view available for Instagram photos.

Wait, there are actually 43 likes and three comments?

Based on all of this, it seems that the more active photo community is actually on Instagram. People who liked my photo on Instagram didn’t like it on Facebook. That would be redundant.

Something interesting to consider: On Facebook I have 1,240 friends. On Instagram I have 432 followers. If 43 of my Instagram followers liked the photo and almost all of those followers are already Facebook friends, one could conclude that Instagram likes happened first and negated the need for a redundant action on Facebook.

Both companies use likes as social currency, but at the moment, in terms of photos, Instagram’s currency seems to be of higher value.

I hope that Facebook’s ownership of Instagram will allow for a like to be a like, as combining actions on one platform will inevitably be a better experience for Facebook’s users, while not really effecting Instagram’s.

I’m excited to see how this acquisition plays out. I think I like it, but I’m not sure yet if I like it like it.

This will blow your mind.

This will blow your mind.
