The London Olympics and The Dark Knight Rises (more on the latter later) have two odd things in common for me.
I will never feel as physically strong as the athletes in the Olympics or the actors in TDKR appear to be.
In January of 2009, I had surgery to remove an unexpectedly large portion of my L5-S1 vertebrae, as it had herniated and was seriously pissing off the nerves in my spine. (more on the cause later)
It’s difficult to describe what it’s like to watch Olympic pole vaulters launch themselves into the air, or Christian Bale and Tom Hardy throw each other around. I envy them, but a quote from TDKR rings true: “I wondered what would break first, your spirit or your body.”
My body might have serious internal points of weakness, but my spirit is strong.
Watching these individuals effects me as I assume it must effect most of us.
It makes me want to be stronger.
