God, Love and Photography
Q: What do these words have in common?
A: Millions of people use them every day and each person has a different definition for each word.
I guarantee that if you define all three words, your definitions will be singular. (unless you cheat and use a standardized dictionary)
I try not to use words like these very often, as they’re far too broad and using them leaves an uncomfortable amount of their meaning open for interpretation.
When we assume that other people have learned the same definitions of words like God or Love, we set ourselves up for disappointment, confusion and ultimately alienation.
It’s a wee bit smarter to expect that each person’s subjective view of the world is marginally skewed, highly specific and completely unique. After all, nobody else has lived life in exactly the same way.
Solipsism is fun, isn’t it?
