Survival
I haven’t ever killed an animal that I subsequently ate. After almost three decades here on Earth I haven’t grown an entire meal myself. Not one.
I make phone calls. Send emails. Answer questions strategically. Build relationships. My survival tactics are political and almost 100% mental. The more successful I am at genuinely connecting with other humans, the easier my survival...

Done
We use the phrase “done is better than perfect” around the office a lot, mostly because waiting for perfection will kill your momentum. If it works, ship it. Revise it later if you have to.
If you have a project you’ve been working on for a long time, it’s quite possible that it’s already done. You might just be wary of putting it out there for the world to see.

[Self] Knowledge is Power
The most inspiring people I’ve met over the years share one common characteristic.
They know who they are and are comfortable in their own skin.
If you don’t know who you are on a basic human level, you can’t represent yourself honestly. You can try, but your energy won’t be quite right. Something will feel off.
The phrase, “just be yourself” exists for a...

Invisible Likes
I think I understand why Instagram was acquired by Facebook for ~$1B.
Stick with me, this will make sense.
Let’s say that I took a photo on my iPhone and decided to share it with Instagram.
Perhaps I chose to share it via Facebook from within Instagram.
On Facebook, you’d see the image below:
As you can see, nobody chose to like it. Using the liked vs. not liked logic, this...

Was curious about shooting iPhone video with a macro lens from Photojojo. Feels a lot like a prime lens on a DSLR

Professional
I don’t know about you, but I don’t refer to my doctor as a professional doctor. When I’m up to my knees in poop, I don’t look for a professional plumber. I look for a plumber. Preferably someone nearby with a powerful shop-vac.
If you frequently describe yourself as a professional something, stop.
You should stop because it comes off like you’re purposely trying to...

A Strange Species
We are.
Some of us climb to the top of the world, risking everything.
Some of us never leave home.
Some of us slice into others to try to fix problems.
Some of us cut into others to exact revenge.
Some of us start businesses, in hopes to change the world.
Some of us hope for nothing more than to fit like a cog in a machine.
Some of us are lonely.
Some of us have found God.
Some of us...

Destiny
To the people who claim that everything happens for a reason.
To the people who believe that there is a plan for each of us.
To the people who leave their fate to a higher power.
I fundamentally disagree with you.
Life is full of happy and sad accidents. If you’re awake and aware enough to notice an opportunity in front of you, grab it.
Every single decision you’ve made up until...

What I've Learned: Day 28
Four weeks later, WSMED (write something meaningful every day) is still a rewarding activity. (whew!)
A few things I’ve learned:
1. For every blog posted, I write down the concept for three other blogs.
2. Each blog idea is recorded via Evernote. If I’m on my phone, laptop or iPad later that night, it’s all there. (use it, it’s great)
3. Universal topics like music,...

Listen to Jessica
If you’re somehow not yet familiar with Jessica Hische, she’s a super talented designer, typographer and illustrator. (read: rock star)
She is quoted as saying: “The work you do while you procrastinate is probably the work you should be doing for the rest of your life.”
The work you do while procrastinating is work you choose to do knowing there is no monetary reward. You...

When was the last time you ran as fast as you possibly can? (treadmills do not count)
Think about it. When was the last time? It doesn’t happen often for most people.
For me, it was in Kauai at 2am on the beach in Hanelei Bay. The moon was huge and lit the night for Brian, Darby and me. The air was a sticky 82º and we had just been rained on.
Given Kauai’s complete lack of...
